Screen Recording records, transcribes, and edits on your Mac. We operate no content servers.
Recordings stay on your Mac
Recording writes ordinary video files to your disk. The app does not upload recordings. A recording leaves your Mac only when you send the MP4 with a share service you pick, such as AirDrop, Messages, or Mail. We never hold your content, because we operate no servers that could hold it, and the app stores nothing in any cloud.
Screen recordings show your inbox, your customer data, and your unreleased work. With a recorder that uploads everything by default, you have to decide for every recording whether it is safe to upload. Screen Recording keeps recordings on your Mac unless you share them.
Permissions, asked when they matter
Screen Recording asks for each macOS permission when you reach what needs it, and says first what it gives. Screen and System Audio Recording records your screen and the sound your Mac plays. The microphone records your voice for the transcript and captions, and the camera shows you in a bubble. Input Monitoring shows your clicks and keystrokes and zooms in where you click, and password fields are never logged. You can set any of them up later, and a recording made without one says what it lacks. Settings, under Permissions, shows where each one stands and opens the right place in System Settings.
Recordings are saved in ~/Movies/Screen Recording, which macOS lets
the app use without asking. If you choose a folder in Documents or on
your Desktop, the app explains first, and macOS asks once.
Transcription runs on device
The speech model used for transcript editing and captions runs on your Mac. Your voice is not sent to us or to a transcription service, and there is no per-minute transcription quota. The language model downloads from Apple the first time you use it and runs locally after that.
Your Plus One account
Screen Recording works without an account. You can sign in to a Plus One account, and every Iterator app on your Mac signs in too. The account holds your sign-in, and your plan and credits if you have them. It never holds your recordings, audio, or transcripts. Sharing uses the share services already on your Mac.
Works offline
Recording, transcription, editing, and export work with no internet connection once the speech language model is installed. Record on a plane, in a lab, or on a network where uploading recordings is not allowed.
What the app sends
The app checks our release server for updates, which sends your IP address and your app and macOS versions. With Share diagnostics on, it also sends crash reports, performance measurements, and recording and export outcomes to Iterator's Lookout service. Share diagnostics is on by default. Turn it off in Settings, under General, then Privacy, and the app keeps your choice. Turning it off clears queued reports, though an already transmitted request can complete. While you are signed in to Plus One, reports also carry your Plus One account ID. Ordinary event properties exclude recordings, audio, transcripts, and file paths. Crash reports can contain memory fragments from the app. The privacy policy lists what is sent.
What this means in practice
- Recordings and transcripts do not pass through our infrastructure. We operate no content servers.
- Ordinary diagnostic events exclude transcripts and video. Crash reports can contain memory fragments.
- The data stays on hardware you already control until you send a file, which limits what a compliance review has to cover.
