Screen Recording vs. Screen Studio
Both are native macOS screen recorders, and both are good at making a recording look finished quickly. They differ in what "finished" means and in how you pay.
Screen Studio's specialty is automatic visual polish, with zoom that follows your cursor, smoothed cursor motion, motion blur, and vertical exports for social. Screen Recording's specialty is the narrated recording, with transcription while you record, editing the video by editing the text, captions that follow every cut, and sharing through your own iCloud.

Pricing
Screen Studio sold one-time licenses, at $89 originally and later $149 and $229, until October 2025, when new customers were moved to subscription only. Many of its users bought it specifically because it was pay-once, and objected publicly when that ended.
Screen Recording is $29, once. It is not an introductory price with a subscription behind it. Local-only software has no monthly server bill to recover, so there is nothing to subscribe to.
Privacy
Screen Studio also runs its transcription on your machine, but doesn't build further on it. Screen Recording makes local-first the whole design. Recording, transcription, editing, and export all work offline, there's no account, and sharing goes through your iCloud, not a vendor cloud.
When Screen Studio is the better fit
If your output is social-media product videos where the auto-zoom, motion-blur aesthetic is the point, Screen Studio automates that look. If your output is narrated recordings, such as demos, tutorials, bug reports, and updates, the work is in the cutting and the captions, and that's what transcript editing is for.
