# Screen Recording (screenrecording.ai)

> Screen Recording is a free native macOS app for recording your screen, window, microphone, system audio, and camera, then sharing an MP4 in seconds or editing the video by editing text. Built by [Iterator, Inc.](https://itrtr.com) (`itrtr.com`), the company behind [Plus One](https://plusone.dev).

## What Screen Recording does

- **Capture** records a full display, an individual application window (including its child popovers, menus, sheets, and dialogs), or a custom screen region using Apple's ScreenCaptureKit at native Retina resolution and up to 60 fps.
- **Separate tracks** capture your screen, camera (FaceTime HD, USB, or iPhone Continuity Camera), microphone, and internal Mac system audio onto independent tracks with live level meters, silence and disconnect warnings, and crash-safe 2-second fragmented recording. You can also import external `.mp4`, `.mov`, `.webm`, and `.mkv` movies.
- **Under-two-minute sharing** shows an after-recording overlay card as soon as you stop (when **Settings › After recording** is set to **Show overlay**) so you can drag the thumbnail, click **Copy MP4**, or choose **More › Share…** to open the editor with the macOS share menu showing (**Copy MP4**, **Export File…**, AirDrop, Messages, Mail, and installed share extensions) and send a finished video straight into Slack, Linear, GitHub, Mail, Messages, or Finder without waiting on a cloud upload.
- **Word and screen-action editing** transcribes speech on device and interleaves spoken words with time-aligned screen action chips (`[Clicked...]`, `[Pressed...]`, `[Typed...]`, `[Switched...]`). Deleting words or action chips cuts the video, audio, camera, and zoom tracks together at the quietest frame between words with 10 ms fade-out and fade-in ramps.
- **Clean Up Speech** removes filler words (`um`, `uh`) and long pauses in one click while automatically protecting intervals where you clicked, typed, moved the pointer, or switched apps.
- **Replace with Recording and Join Recording** let you record a short pickup take, select the outdated words in the original transcript, and splice the pickup recording's passage into place without re-recording the whole video. Linked **Clips** let you publish focused cuts from a longer recording.
- **Automatic polish** turns logged pointer coordinates, clicks, and 10 Hz window tracking into smart click zooms (which skip window-focus clicks), fixed-point zooms, Gaussian cursor smoothing, click rings, keystroke overlays, Studio Sound voice isolation, and `16 by 9`, `9 by 16`, `1 by 1`, and `4 by 3` canvases.
- **Camera and captions** support per-passage `Full Frame`, `Bubble`, and `Hidden` camera layouts, VideoToolbox jump-cut smoothing, boxed and outlined captions that move out of the way of bottom zooms, on-device Translation with sentence corrections, and `.srt`/`.vtt` import and export.
- **Privacy and redaction** includes **Private Details** (`Find` and `Cover` using on-device Vision OCR to track and blur or cover sensitive text across scrolling and zooms, plus clean background patches and `[covered]` replacement in transcripts, captions, guides, and agent reads), post-capture **Keep One Window** to isolate a single moving app window from a full-display recording, and automatic **Secure Event Input** keystroke suppression in password fields.
- **Illustrated guides and bug reports** live in the **Steps** tab, which turns any recording into a step-by-step guide or a structured bug report (with Observed, Expected, Possible Cause, and Not Shown in the Recording) with rendered Retina step pictures in Markdown, HTML, or PDF.
- **Coding agents and MCP** include the in-app **Screen Recording Agent** and a local MCP server (`'/Applications/Screen Recording.app/Contents/Helpers/screenrecording' mcp`) for Claude Code and Codex with more than 35 tools (`recording_list`, `recording_read`, `transcript_read`, `actions_read`, `frame_render`, `contact_sheet`, `writeup_read`, `writeup_write`, `writeup_export`, `words_cut`, `actions_cut`, `speech_clean`, `privacy_find`, `cover_add`, `window_keep`, `export_start`, and more).
- **Pro exports** write up to 4K 60 fps HEVC or H.264 MP4, looping GIF, Apple ProRes 422 HQ, WAV/M4A audio, PNG/JPEG stills, multi-language SRT/VTT captions, and native FCPXML 1.11 and Final Cut Pro 7 XML timeline bundles for Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve.

## Pricing and system requirements

- **Pricing** Screen Recording is free on Mac for recording, transcript and action editing, automatic zooms, backgrounds, Private Details redaction, on-device captions and translation, illustrated guides, local MCP tools, and local exports. Signing in with a Plus One account (`https://plusone.dev`) is optional for cloud AI features such as the built-in Screen Recording Agent, and a new Plus One account gets 100 free credits to start.
- **Requirements** macOS 26.4 or later on a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or newer). Recordings live locally in `~/Movies/Screen Recording` (or a folder you choose in Settings).
